Gov't to seek urgent solutions to counter COVID-19 impacts
VGP – The Government will host a video-teleconference on March 10 with the participation of local leaders to elaborate on comprehensive measures to cope with negative impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Specifically, the participants will debate on measures to boost production difficulties, accelerate public investment; support epidemic-hit laborers, ensure social welfare and social order.

The pandemic has resulted in multi-faceted impacts on multiple sectors and industries, noticeably at least 19% of businesses have suspended operations and 98% of service sector’s workers have to stay at home due to closure of non-essential service facilities, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Around 98% of staff of the aviation sector have temporarily stopped working and millions of others have been severely affected, the ministry estimated.

The epidemic has also greatly affected other vulnerable groups like social protection beneficiaries and poor households, said the ministry.

It is estimated that around 2 million laborers will stop working or loose jobs in April and May and the figure may rise to 3.5 million if the epidemic continues to worsen.

The epidemic impacts on business and production was “very serious”, according to a survey conducted by the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry earlier this month.

Over 40% of the respondents said the epidemic led to shortage of input materials, 43% said they had to reduce payroll, and 60% reported shortage of capital.

The survey also revealed that nearly 30% of the respondents said they could only sustain operation in less than three months and more than 75% said they would have to reduce workforce.

In a bid to ease difficulties resulted from the epidemic, the Government initiated a VND 62 trillion package to support about 20 million people during a period of three months.

Regarding the fiscal tool, the Government chief signed Decree No. 41/2020/ND-CP on extension of deadlines for tax and land use fees payment.
