PM calls for “serious commitments and responsibility” from all countries to protect peace, stability in East Sea

During the meeting, the leaders discussed means to build a stronger ASEAN Community that is people-centered, leaves no one behind, and looks to the future.

The regional leaders also exchanged views on the future of ASEAN under the theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability” to enhance sustainability within the region in all dimensions.

Addressing the event, PM Phuc highlighted the significance of upholding ASEAN solidarity and unity and building an open, transparent and ruled-based regional architecture.

The Government chief asked other ASEAN member countries to support Viet Nam to successfully fulfill its role as ASEAN Chair in 2020, contributing to building the ASEAN Community with sustainable development and extensive partnership with the bloc’s partners.

Phuc called for ASEAN’s common voice amid complicated developments in the region and the world.

Regarding the East Sea issue, PM Phuc stressed that maintaining an international legal order is the prerequisite for peace and stability in the East Sea.

The recent serious incidents that occurred in the waters of the region and Viet Nam and that violated international law, have given ASEAN great lessons, according to the Vietnamese leader.

Expressing his concern over fragile security and stability in the East Sea, Phuc called for “serious commitments and responsibility” from all countries in the region to ensure that the similar incidents will not repeat.

Viet Nam is determined to resolutely and consistently protect international law in international relations in general and in the East Sea issue in particular, PM Phuc affirmed.

The same day, PM Phuc had bilateral meetings with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha, and attended the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and FIFA,  paving way for the two organizations to join forces to leverage football as a catalyst for social development and healthy lifestyles in the region.
