VN, Cambodia develop comprehensive ties

VGP – Cambodian PM Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen will lead a high-ranking delegation to pay an official visit to Viet Nam from October 4-5.

This will be the second official visit of the Cambodian PM to Viet Nam within a year in the context that the Viet Nam-Cambodian relations are witnessing fine developments. 

Viet Nam and Cambodia established the diplomatic ties on June 24, 1967.

Over the past years, two-way trade turnovers increased constantly, surpassing US$ 4.7 billion in 2018 and over US$ 3 billion in the first eight months of 2019. 

Regarding investment, Viet Nam had over 200 FDI projects in Cambodia, making it one of Top 5 investors in Cambodia with over US$ 3 billion of investment capital on such area as rubber planting, telecom, finance, banking, and energy.

The two sides signed the agreement on double taxation avoidance; the agreement in economic and trade promotion in the 2019-2020 period; the cooperative strategy on transport cooperation with a vision towards 2030, and the agreement on road transport (revised) and another on water transport. 

Viet Nam yearly provides non-refundable aid for Cambodia. Typically cooperative projects included the Cambodia National Assembly building – a gift from the Party, State and people of Viet Nam, a vulnerable rehabilitation center for drug addicts in Sihanouk province, a high school in Mondullkiri province, and modal border market in Tbong Khmum province. 

In the area of education and training, Viet Nam granted 100 scholarships for Cambodia under signed agreement and hundreds of others in various fields. 

In healthcare, the two sides created favorable ways for Cambodian citizens to get medical checkups at equal costs of Vietnamese peers. 

About 800,000 Vietnamese tourists travelled to Cambodia in 2018. The figure went up to 835,000 in 2018. Viet Nam was the second largest travel market of Cambodia.

As of early December, 2018, the two countries defined and built 315 out of 371 major border markers. As of September, 2019, Viet Nam and Cambodia successfully finalized demarcation for about 1,045 km of border line.  Demarcation and markers planting work has been fulfilled 84%. 

The upcoming official tour of PM Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen will take place in the context that the Viet Nam-Cambodian relations are witnessing fine developments. Via the visit, the PM hopes to cement and deepen cooperation in economics, trade, investment, border, and transport./.
