Program on endangered turtle protection released

VGP – The PM has recently ratified a program on conservation of Vietnamese endangered turtle species by 2025 with a vision towards 2030.

The program aims to protect Vietnamese endangered turtle species and their living environment in a sustainable way, contributing to Viet Nam’s biodiversity.

The program stipulates specific goals for preserving Vietnamese endangered turtle species by 2025 with a vision towards 2030 including (1) issuing a legal system for preserving endangered turtle species; (2) strengthening investigations to research on endangered turtle species; (3) building and managing protective zones, rescue work, raising and preserving of rare turtle species; (4) enhancing efficiency of management and law enforcement on endangered turtle species; (5) raising public awareness and participation into preservation. 

Especially, the program targets to establish three species conservation areas and new habitats for endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles including turtle species in the Central Region (Mauremys annamensis) at Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province, Hoan Kiem turle (Rafetus swinhoei) at Son Tay, Ha Noi, Cuora species at Dong Hoa and Tay Hoa districts, Phu Yen provinces. 

The  program also plans to establish and operate two rescue stations for sea turtles in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Khanh Hoa provinces./.
