Upgrading cooperation between the two airlines has been considered as progress in the two nations’ airlines since the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam received the Category 1 rating (CAT 1), which has affirmed the quality of service and the safety oversight of Viet Nam Airlines in particular and other airlines in the country in general.

Accordingly, the two airlines will inspect the operation system in September 2019. As the system of Viet Nam Airlines is qualified in October 2019, Delta Air Lines will start selling tickets for flights launched by Viet Nam Airlines on Ha Noi-Tokyo air route to serve  passengers desiring to travel to the U.S.

This is the first step for Viet Nam Airlines to explore Viet Nam-U.S. market.

Earlier, since 2010, Viet Nam Airlines have inked one-way flexible partnership agreements with Delta Air Lines on 10 air routes to the U.S. and 10 domestic routes in the U.S. Thanks to these agreements, passengers of Viet Nam Airlines can travel to eight states in the U.S. through transits of  Delta Air Lines  in Tokyo (Japan) and Frankfurt (Germany).

In 2018, Viet Nam-U.S. market capacity is estimated at 757,000 passengers, an increase of 8% compared to the previous year. There has been no Viet Nam-U.S. direct air route but passengers travelling between the two countries may choose favorable airlines thanks to cooperation between Viet Nam Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

In 2018, the two airlines welcomed 18,000 passengers within their air flight cooperation, mainly those travelling from the U.S. to Viet Nam.
