PM arrives in Saint Petersburg, begins official visit to Russia

VGP – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his wife, accompanied by a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, arrived at Pulkovo Airport in Saint Petersburg on the evening of May 20, beginning their four-day official visit to Russia.

The PM was greeted at the airport by Russian Ambassador to Viet Nam Konstantin Vnukov, leaders of Saint Petersburg, representatives from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Ngo Duc Manh, officials and employees at the Vietnamese Embassy, and representatives from the Vietnamese community in Saint Petersburg.

As part of his working agenda in Saint Petersburg, one of the three centrally-run cities of Russia, PM Phuc will attend an exhibition entitled “Vietnamese ancient cultures” held for the first time at the Winter Palace under the framework of the Cross Year between the two countries, also known as the Viet Nam Year in Russia and the Russia Year in Viet Nam.

The Cross Year event lasts more than one year, from 2019 to 2002, aiming to mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on fundamental principles of the Viet Nam-Russia friendly relations and the 70th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.

During his stay in Saint Petersburg, PM Phuc will lay a wreath at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery, visit the Lenin monument and the legendary Russian cruiser Aurora, and meet with the Acting Governor of Saint Petersburg.

Later, the Vietnamese leader will depart for Moscow, where he is to hold talks and meetings with Russia’s senior leaders and join the Russian PM to co-chair the opening ceremony of the Viet Nam-Russia Cross Years. He will also attend the Viet Nam-Russia Business Forum, host receptions for a number of major Russian firms, meet with the association of Viet Nam veterans of Russia and the Russia-Viet Nam Friendship Association, and present the Friendship Order to a number of Russian citizens who have contributed significantly to relations between the two countries.
