PM receives UN Under-Secretary-General

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted a reception on May 12 for Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and and the Pacific (ESCAP) on the sidelines of the United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations.

PM Phuc hailed the UN Under-Secretary-General for her attendance and speech at the UN Day of Vesak celebrations. He also praised her sentiments and attention to Viet Nam.

Viet Nam, said PM Phuc, attaches importance to the central role of the UN in international law making process, peace keeping, conflict prevention, and response to global challenges. He also affirmed that Viet Nam always regards the UN as one of its leading priorities in diplomatic policies. 

The host leader applauded the cooperation between Viet Nam and the UN over the past 40 years and the support of UN organizations including the UNESCAP in promoting economic and social development cooperation in regional scope and every country. 

He suggested the UNESCAP boost cooperative program with Viet Nam. He also proposed the international organization support Viet Nam to realize SDGs. 

PM Phuc took the occasion to reiterate Viet Nam’s policy on safeguarding the freedom of religion and belief.

In reply, the UN Under-Secretary-General thanked the Vietnamese Government and the Buddhist Sangha of Viet Nam for inviting her to attend the United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations. The UN Under-Secretary-General expressed her deep impression of Viet Nam’s robust development and hoped to cement and deepen the relations between Viet Nam and the UNESCAP.

Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana expressed the aspiration that Viet Nam would uphold the role as the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 and help boost the relations between ASEAN and UNESCAP./.
