USAID support to VN's WTO commitments fulfillment acknowledged

VNGOVNet – On January 22, Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Huy, Vice Chair of the Government Office received Mr. Steve Parker, Director of the Support for Trade Acceleration Project (STAR) project under USAID Vietnam, on the occasion of the end of this technical assistance program for the implementation of the Vietnam–US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in the first period (2001-2006).

It is said that through the project duration, STAR has worked with 46 units of ministries, Government bodies, the National Assembly, the Supreme Court and the Supreme Procuracy. In 2006, in drafting legal documents, it helped to build many clauses in the Bill on Sentence Execution, Bill on Stock Exchange, Decrees to clarify the Investment Law, and Bill on Business. USAID has provided US$ 13.6 million as the first period nonrefundable grant to finance all this.

Mr. Steve Parker, STAR Director, said USAID commits another US$ 9 million in 2007-2009 and extends the Project to 2011 to support Vietnam in delivering on its BTA and WTO commitments.

On this occasion, Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Huy presented the Certificate of Great Service to Mr. Steve Parker and expressed his desire that STAR and USAID would continue their effective support to Vietnam's socio-economic development programs.
