VN calls on UN to facilitate compliance to resolutions on Middle East

VGP – Vietnamese Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy has urged the United Nations Security Council to demonstrate its strong and effective leadership to take specific actions and join the sides involved to ensure their compliance to the council’s resolutions, aiming to end violence and damage to civilians and help reach a comprehensive, fair and sustainable solution that embraces the legitimate interests of all parties.

Quy, Head of Viet Nam’s Permanent Mission to the UN made the remark during the UN Security Council’s quarterly open debate, themed “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question”, on January 22 under the chair of the Dominican Republic, which is holding the rotating presidency of the council.

The diplomat said despite efforts made by the UN Security Council and other UN bodies last year, the field situation seems to have gotten worse.

The rampant and excessive use of violence still remains popular; civilians continue to be victims of conflict with the highest rate of casualties in five years; and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is facing a budget crisis, he stated.

He attributed these problems to the low respect and enforcement, even violation of the UN Security Council’s resolutions, particularly Resolution 2334, which condemns the Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories as illegal.

Mr.Quy affirmed that Viet Nam backs the two-state solution, which endorses an independent state of Palestine co-existing peacefully alongside Israel following the border that was internationally recognised prior to 1967.

The ambassador urged sides involved to respect international law, the Security Council’s related resolutions and to settle the issue by peaceful measures in line with the UN Charter.

Reporting to the UN Security Council, Nickolay Mladenov, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, warned of the adverse impacts of recent developments, such as Israel’s approving the building of more than 3,100 houses in resettlement areas in the West Bank, promoting the adoption of a law legalizing over 60 illegal built establishments in the West Bank, and destroying and occupying the facilities owned by the Palestinians.
