Fruits exceed crude oil, setting new record

VGP – Overseas shipment of fruits and vegetables set a new record in export turnover after outstripping crude oil in 2018.

Fruits and vegetables became a new driving force for agricultural and rural development. 

Specifically, in 2016, export turnover of fruits and vegetables hit US$ 2.4 billion, representing a year-on-year growth of 33.6%. In 2017, the sector earned US$ 3.5 billion of export turnover, posting a sharp increase of 42.5%. In 2018, overseas shipment of fruits and vegetables valued US$ 3.52 billion, up 10.8% against 2017. In December 2018, fruit and vegetable export valued US$ 262.3 million, down 10% against November. 

With over US$ 3.5 billion of export, fruit and vegetable commodities outstripped tea, pepper, and rice. 

Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are available in China, the U.S., Southeast Asian countries, the EU, the Republic of Korea, and Japan with over US$ 100 million of export turnover each. China occupied the largest proportion of export by holding 73% of the market share with US$ 2.78 billion, up 5.03% against 2017. 

The Viet Nam Fruit and Vegetables Association (VINAFRUIT) assessed that the global market and the domestic fruit and vegetable chains are promising./.
