Gov’t to scrutinize food safety in nine localities

VGP – The PM has decided to pilot food safety investigations in nine localities namely Ha Noi, HCMC, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho, Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Dong Nai, and Gia Lai.

The trial program will be implemented at all administrative levels at districts and communes in Ha Noi and HCMC.

In the rest seven provinces and cities, the program will be conducted at less than 25% of administrative levels at districts and 20% of administrative levels at communes. 

The pilot program will last one year and the pilot investigations will take place after six months after the document  takes effect on January 10, 2019. 

Officers of Offices on healthcare, economics, economics and infrastructure, agriculture and rural development, and healthcare clinics are responsible for inspecting the enforcement of food safety regulations.

The first half of 2018 alone saw VND 4.4 billion (US$ 191,300) worth of food safety violation fines in Viet Nam, by over 1,600 offenders in the food business industry. Over 68,000 businesses were reported to violate food safety regulations.

It is vital to enhance the post-inspection work on food safety and hygine to better control food quality, said Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien./.
