This was the first time that Viet Nam hosted the most prestigious international event on rice trade.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue affirmed that the development of agriculture, farmers and rural areas is a big policy of the Party, State and Government of Viet Nam, in which the development of rice production and exports occupies an important position, helping ensure food security for Viet Nam and contributing to ensuring food security for both the region and the world.

The rice cultivation area now accounts for about 60% of the total area of annual crops and rice production is an important source of livelihood for approximately nine million farming households in Viet Nam’s rural regions, he said.

Currently, Viet Nam is one of the three largest rice exporters in the world, with an average annual volume of 5-6 million tonnes to 150 countries and territories, and revenues of US$2.5 billion, the deputy PM noted.

The Vietnamese Government has recently issued a new decree on rice export and a separate strategy for developing the rice export market, he said, affirming that these policies would help create an open environment for rice production and trade, moving towards the goals of associating production with the market, ensuring the quality of rice for exports, and participating deeply in the global rice value chain, thereby building and affirming the prestige and brand of Vietnamese rice.

He also called on delegates to contribute ideas in terms of directions for the development of rice production and trade in Viet Nam.

According to Chairman and CEO of The Rice Trader Magazine, Viet Nam’s rice production and trade has made positive progress. In the context of complicated happenings  in the world’s economic and trade situation, The Rice Trader official expressed his belief in the interest of the Government of Viet Nam in developing the values of rice products in the coming time.
