RoK, VN keen to enhance people-to-people exchange

At the meeting, Moon Hee-sang said the State visit to Viet Nam in March 2018 by President Moon Jae-in showed the RoK’s recognition of great importance to its relations with Viet Nam, during which both sides pledged to beef up economic and trade cooperation.

He said his nation regards Viet Nam as a priority in its strategy of cooperation with Southeast Asian nations, noting that in order to back such initiative, the RoK legislature has set up the ASEAN – RoK Inter-Parliamentary Forum. 

Over the past years, the RoK has also provided solutions for e-government building in Viet Nam and worked with the country to increase flights between the two nations.

During which she affirmed the Vietnamese legislative body’s readiness to further step up friendship and cooperation with the National Assembly of the RoK.

She thanked the RoK for sending condolences and a high-ranking delegation led by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon to the state funeral of President Tran Dai Quang. 

Regarding the flourishing Viet Nam – RoK ties since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations on December 22, 1992, the top Vietnamese legislator said both sides have become partners of primary importance in multiple fields. 

She called for greater efforts to step up joint activities under agreements reached by the two nations’ leaders and the Viet Nam – RoK Joint Statement 2018 signed during the RoK President’s visit to Vietnam, with parliamentary cooperation being considered an important channel. 

The Vietnamese NA leader voiced hope that the two law-making bodies would work more closely together to reinforce ties between the two States and peoples, and offer mutual support at regional and global inter-parliamentary forums, contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability and development in the region and the world. 

Cooperation between the two countries in security, national defence, education - training, labor, culture and sports has seen strong development along with strengthened people-to-people exchange.

NA Chairwoman Ngan also welcomed the RoK’s “New Southern Policy” that facilitates ties with ASEAN countries with a focus on Viet Nam while affirming Viet Nam’s willingness to act as a bridge for the promotion of all-around cooperation between the RoK and the regional bloc. 

Currently, the RoK is the second largest supplier of official development assistance (ODA) and the second largest investor of Viet Nam. The more than 160,000 citizens living and working in each side and the over 60,000 RoK – Viet Nam multicultural families are serving as a bridge for stronger bilateral friendship.
