The university, founded in 2008 under the two Governments’ cooperation, State of Hessen, the World Bank and German universities, is hoped to become a high-quality research university in Viet Nam.

The PM has assigned the Ministry of Education and Training to review the project’s implementation, eliminate intermediary steps, replace incapable contractors, improve the effectiveness of management and enhance the rate of progress of the project.

The Ministry of Education and Training is tasked to join hand with the Ministries of Finance and Planning and Investment, other relevant agencies and partners from Germany to submit to the PM specific mechanisms of the university, thus ensuring the effectiveness of the project.

The university is currently located in Thu Dau Mot City, the southern province of Binh Duong and will be relocated in Ben Cat Town once the campus is completed.

The construction of the new campus began in October 2016, with total investment of more than US$200 million, including US$180.4 million of soft loans from the International Development Association (IDA) and US$20.2 million from the Vietnamese Government.

The project, covering 50.5ha, is divided into two phases. In Phase 1, the facility will be established for a maximum capacity of 5,000 students and prepared for its planned relocation in 2019. In Phase 2, it will be completed to serve 12,000 students.
