CPI in May highest over six years

VGP – Viet Nam’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) picked up 0.55% in May, the highest monthly increase over the recent six years, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The CPI in May witnessed a 3.86% rise year-on-year and a 1.61% increase against December last year. The average CPI growth in the first five months of 2018 saw a year-on-year increase of 3.01 %.

Among 11 commodity and service groups, nine posted monthly increases in prices, including transportation (1.72%); food and catering services (0.88%); housing, water and electricity supply, and construction materials (0.34%); household equipment and appliances (0.1%); beverages and cigarettes (0.08 %); culture, entertainment and tourism (0.08%); apparel, headwear and footwear (0.08%); medicines and health care services (0.03%); and goods and other services (0.02%).

The price of post and telecommunications services decreased 0.14% while the price of education group unchanged.

Core inflation (CPI exclusive of fresh food, energy, and State-controlled services such as health care and education) in May rose 0.11% against the previous month and up 1.37% compared to the same period last year.
