Expansion of Hoa Binh hydropower plant approved

VGP – Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung has signed Decision No. 389/QD-TTg approving an investment plan for the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion project, which seeks to increase the peak capacity for the national power system and to utilize the excess water resource during the flood season to generate power.

The expansion also aims to enhance the frequency modulation and stabilization capabilities of the national power system, whilst contributing to reducing the costs of the power system, mitigating the operational intensity of the existing turbines, thereby extending the life span of the equipment and saving maintenance and repair costs.

The extension project has a preliminary investment capital of approximately VND8.6 trillion (US$378.4 million), which will be used to construct two additional turbines with a combined installed capacity of 480MW and an average annual electricity output of 479 million kWh (flood season), thus increasing the existing Hoa Binh hydropower plant’s power mobilisation capability in peak hours of the dry season to about 264.4 million kWh per year.

The two new turbines of the Hoa Binh hydropower plant are scheduled to be put into operation in 2022 and 2023.
