VN, Japan sign Joint Vision Statement on defense relations

Vietnamese Minster of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich and his Japanese counterpart Onodera Itsunori sign a Joint Vision Statement on Viet Nam-Japan defense relations in Tokyo on April 10.
The document will help orient and accelerate the bilateral defense cooperation contents in the time to come.

Minister Lich is on an official visit to Japan on the occasion of the 45th founding anniversary of Viet Nam-Japan diplomatic ties.

During their talks on the same day, the two ministers discussed on bilateral defense cooperation and regional security matters of mutual concerns.

The pair spoke highly of the fast advancement of Viet Nam-Japan defense cooperation in various fields, especially cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces.

The two ministers expressed their hope that defense ties will continue to be a key pillar of the overall Viet Nam-Japan relationship.

Regarding maritime issues, including the East Sea, the two sides underlined that relevant parties need to exercise self-restraint, fully respect diplomatic and legal processes, settle disputes via peaceful means on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea while seriously implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Party in the East Sea (DOC), working towards formation of an effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

The two ministers voiced support for denuclearization by peaceful means and for constructive, practical and serious actions and to fully implement the United Nations Security Council’s Resolutions to contribute to peace, security, and stability in the region and the world.

Minister Lich highly valued Japan’s participation in multilateral mechanisms as well as the Northeast Asian country’s initiatives to maintain peace and stability in the region.

As Viet Nam will assume the Chair of ASEAN in 2020 when the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM ) mechanism is marked, Lich wished that Japan will support Viet Nam to successfully perform the role and host defense conferences and commemorative activities on the occasion./.
