Addressing the meeting, Politburo member Binh said that Viet Nam always keeps a close eye on the situation in Myanmar, and believes that Myanmar’s national reconciliation and peace process will be a success in the time ahead.

He highly appreciated the rapid developments of the Viet Nam-Myanmar relations over the past few years, especially the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive cooperative partnership during the State visit made by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to Myanmar in August 2017.

Viet Nam has become the seventh largest foreign investor in Myanmar with 70 projects totally worth more than US$2 billion, the deputy PM said, stating that two-way trade between the two countries reached US$828.3 million in 2017, exceeding the target of US$500 million set by the senior leaders of both sides.

He pledged to create the most favorable conditions for the acceleration of cooperation between Viet Nam’s Committee for Ethnic Affairs and the Myanmar Ministry of Border Affairs, especially in sharing experience on ethnic policies, expressing his wish that Myanmar would soon become a member of the Mekong River Commission in the time ahead.

Minister Ye Aung informed Deputy PM Binh of the results of the Myanmar delegation’s working trip to Viet Nam, stating that his visit aimed to strengthen cooperation on ethnic affairs between the two countries.

The national reconciliation and peace process in Myanmar takes time and is also an important goal in Myanmar’s development process, he said, calling for the support of Viet Nam in particular and the international community as a whole, in order to construct an increasingly prosperous Myanmar nation.
