DPM receives Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization

Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung made that statement at his reception for Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Petteri Taalas on February 27 in Ha Noi. 

Viet Nam is willing to fully implement the international commitments on prevention and mitigation of consequences caused by natural calamity, effectively operate the regional forecasting center, a flashflood warning guidance centre of Southeast Asia and actively join in WMO’s cooperative programs and activities, he asserted. 

He called for more assistance from the WMO to Viet Nam in developing human resources and improving the country’s hydro meteorological forecasting and monitoring capacity. 

The Deputy PM also asked the organization to help Viet Nam access the global database and modern forecasting technologies, and improve its capacity to provide climate services, while supporting the country in international cooperation in hydro meteorology, climate change and other relevant spheres.

Mr. Petteri Taalas hailed the Vietnamese Government’s priorities to meteorology and hydrology, especially investment in human resource development and automatic and modern monitoring stations. 

The WMO will support Viet Nam to mobilize and call for investment resources in improving the capacity in response to climate change and natural calamity, he affirmed, suggesting the nation complete the legal framework to mobilize more social resources. 

Viet Nam became the official member of the WMO in 1975 and was selected to put the regional flashflood warning guidance centre.
