The U.S., Japan, China, and the Republic of Korea were the four biggest importers of Vietnamese aquatic products by all together dominating 55.3%. Markets expanding at the fast growing rates included China (up 64.4%); the Netherlands (48.6%); the UK (36.4%); the Republic of Korea (29.1%); Canada (22.3%); and Japan (20%).
In December 2017, import of aquatic products was estimated at US$ 152 million. Total import was projected at US$ 1.45 billion in 2017, representing a year-on-year surge of 30.4%.
The Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported that shrimp was the biggest hard currency earner by holding 21% of total export turnover with US$ 3.8 billion; followed by tra fish with US$ 1.8 billion.
Noticeably, China outstripped the U.S. to become the biggest importer of Vietnamese tra fish and shrimp products./.
