Speaking at the event, Assistant to Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu highlighted the historical mark of Viet Nam’s approval of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, proving the nation’s policy to respect international humanitarian law and accelerate the realization of the international humanitarian law in particular and international regulations in general.

Viet Nam has enhanced the implementation of the Convention through completing laws and mechanisms in the country and international cooperation to improve the awareness and capacity for related forces to ensure the realization of specific principles as well as accelerate international cooperation in launching humanitarian works to overcome war consequences, urgent cases on natural calamity, climate change, environmental pollution and humanitarian treatment on fishermen.

Viet Nam has a crucial role and voice in promoting the respect of the international humanitarian law, said head of the ICRC Regional Delegation Beat Schweizer, expressing his hope that the nation will continue making contribution to developing the international humanitarian law.

At the workshop, participants shared Viet Nam’s experience in implementing the Geneva Conventions of 1949 during wartime and in dealing with war consequences, raising awareness of the international humanitarian law, and stepping up the enforcement of the Geneva Conventions and other contents of the international humanitarian law.

On June 5, 1957, President Ho Chi Minh signed a document declaring Viet Nam’s joining of the Geneva Conventions of 1949.

These conventions have had 196 parties, and they are among the few international treaties that have such a large number of member states and are applied around the globe.
