UN provides US$4 million for VN to overcome typhoon Damrey consequences

VGP – The United Nations on November 28 has approved an additional sponsor of US$4.21 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support 150,000 people, including 46,973 children in six provinces affected by typhoon Damrey in Viet Nam.

The additional sponsor from the CERF will allow agencies of the UN to strengthen activities in terms of clean water supply, sanitation and environment, food security and repair houses for local people.

An estimate of 4.33 million people were affected from consequences of typhoon Damrey, 400,000 of whom need urgent humanitarian support.

An urgent aid of US$100,000 was sponsored from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on November 15.

Thanks to the close coordination with the Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (CCNDPC), Viet Nam Red Cross and other partners, the UN is enhancing support to ensure vulnerable people to be protected and assisted, said UN Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam Kamal Malhotra.

The UN estimated that after typhoon Damrey, around US$60.48 million will be needed in the next 12 months to address short and mid-term demand.
