PM hosts receptions for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, IMF Managing Director, world’s major groups

VGP - PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc held a number of receptions in the central city of Da Nang on November 10 for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde and leaders of major groups and companies who were attending the APEC CEO Summit 2017.

During a reception for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor, PM Phuc expected that during her tenure, Hong Kong’s position as the ninth largest trade partner and the sixth largest foreign direct investment partner of Viet Nam will be lifted, affirming the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as one of the top important economic-trade, investment and tourism partners of Viet Nam.

The PM suggested the administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region encourage capable firms to expand operations in Viet Nam, especially in transport, infrastructure, electronic components, and supporting and processing industries on the basis of ensuring environmental protection, sustainable development as well as further step up collaboration in the fields of finance-banking, securities.

He hoped that Hong Kong will create more favorable conditions for Vietnamese guest workers and increase the import of goods from Viet Nam, such as agro-forestry-aquatic products, apparel and footwear.

PM Phuc also urged Hong Kong to support Vietnamese firms to partake in trade, investment and tourism promotion activities in Hong Kong and expanding cooperation in culture, education, labour and tourism.

Ms. Carrie Lam spoke highly of Viet Nam’s preparations for the APEC Year 2017, affirming that authorities of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region appreciates mutually-beneficial ties with Viet Nam, particularly in economy, trade, investment, culture, education and tourism.

During PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s meeting with Managing Director of the IMF Christine Lagarde, he hailed the IMF’s supervision, evaluation, and consultancy for Viet Nam in macro-economic aspects, technical assistance, and human resource training.

Viet Nam will continue its efforts to stabilize the macro-economy, improve the investment climate, build a constructive government to serve enterprises and people, better market economy institutions, restructure the economy and renovate the growth model, he said.

PM Phuc suggested IMF continue advising the Government of Vietnam on running the macro-economy, completing financial-monetary tools and restructuring the finance-banking sector.

The government leader also called on IMF to increase its technical assistance in the fields of Vietnam’s needs and enhance the capability of Vietnamese economic, finance and banking managers.

For her part, Lagarde said besides financial assistance, IFM is considering the possibility of providing more technical and training assistance for Vietnam.

While affirming her support for the Vietnamese Government’s priorities in reducing social inequality and enhancing climate change adaptation, she suggested Viet Nam improve labor productivity and competitiveness of the economy and promote women empowerment in economic development.

The same day, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc received leaders of major groups and companies who were attending the APEC CEO Summit 2017 in the central city of Da Nang.

He highly valued their contributions to the nation’s important political, economic, and diplomatic event, and joining hands with the Government to make the APEC Year successful.

He emphasized the significance of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, saying that it has gathered leaders and enterprises from the world’s leading economies.
