Typhoon Damrey leaves at least 63 deaths and missing

VGP – As of early November 6, 44 deaths and 19 missing people were reported after typhoon Damrey (the 12th tropical storm) slammed Viet Nam.

The death toll included four in Quang Ngai, three in Binh Dinh, one in Phu Yen, 27 in Khanh Hoa, three in Lam Dong, one in Kon Tum, one in Dak Lak. Four others were found dead in a transport accident. So far, 19 people were reported missing. 

The typhoon, heavy rains, and floods destroyed 1358 houses; blew the roofs of over 114,866 others. Up to 1,286 transport and fishing boats were damaged and sunk.  

The storm submerged 5,296 hectares of paddy; 14,849 hectares of vegetables and fruits. 

In response to the natural disaster, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc issued Public Telegraph 1680/CD-TTg, dated November 4 and Public Telegraph 1681, dated November 5 to task the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, relevant ministries, agencies, and localities in the South Central Coast, the Central Region, and the Central Highlands Region to soon overcome the consequences./.
