Death toll rises to 54 due to heavy downpours

VGP – The devastating rainfalls and floods have left 93 dead and missing, 31 injured, demolished 189 houses and submerged 31,000 others.

The dead toll rose to 54, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control reported this morning.

The historical rainfalls and floods collapsed 189 houses and submerged 30,827 others. Nearly 2,000 households were urgently evacuated to safer places. 

The floods also led to over 60 breakdowns at dykes in Thanh Hoa, Ha Noi, Ha Nam, and Nam Dinh. 

Regarding agro-fishery production, as much as 22,926 hectares of paddy rice were damanged; 29,192 hectares of corn, flowers, vegetables were destroyed. Over 16,000 hectares of fruits lost. 

The natural disaster also swept away 5,747 animals and 174,793 poultry. 

So far, a large number of transport lines have been blocked in Yen Bai, Hoa Binh and Son La. In addition, some communes have been isolated. 

In response to the problem, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention tasked localities to seriously implement the PM’s Public telegraph 1560/CD-TTg, dated October 12, 2017 on overcoming flood consequences in the North and North Central Region.

The localities were urged to keep a close watch on flood developments, flood discharging, and tropical storm Khanun to take preventive measures./.
