VN elected as Chair of WIPO General Assembly

VGP – Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, Head of Viet Nam’s permanent delegation to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva has become new Chair of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Assembly.

He was elected to the position for the tenure 2018-2019 this morning at the start of the 49th WIPO General Assembly represented by 191 member countries.

Speaking at the session, Ambassdor Dung, who represents the Asia-Pacific region, expressed thanks to support of WIPO member countries for him and Viet Nam.

Earlier, Viet Nam had been elected for the first time to chair the WIPO Program and Budget Committee for the 2013-15 term and the WIPO Coordination Committee for the 2014-2015 term.

WIPO is an important intellectual property partner of Viet Nam as it has granted valuable support for law building, capacity improvement and modernization of intellectual property agencies in Viet Nam.

Thanks to WIPO assistance, for the first time, Viet Nam ranked 47 among 127 economies on the 2017 Global Innovation Index (GII), up 12 places against 2016.

WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information and cooperation. It is a self-funding agency of the United Nations, with 191 member states.

Its mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective international intellectual property (IP) system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.

WIPO’s mandate, governing bodies and procedures are set out in the WIPO Convention, which established WIPO in 1967./.
