Maritime police receives cutter USCGC Morgenthau

VGP – The United States Coast Guard (USCG) handed over cutter USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722), the eighth of twelve 378-foot dual-powered turbine/diesel Hamilton-class high to the Viet Nam Coast Guard in Honolulu (Hawaii) on May 25 (local time).

The cutter will be renamed CSB 8020, is expected to improve the Viet Nam Coast Guard’s maritime domain awareness, increase its capacity to perform maritime law enforcement operations and conduct search and rescue and other humanitarian response operations.

The former high endurance cutter Morgenthau (WHEC 722) was originally commissioned in 1969 and was decommissioned in mid-April ahead of the planned transfer.

It has a displacement of 3,250 tons, 115 meters in length, 13 meters in width, and a capacity of 160 people (including 20 officials and 140 crew members).

The cutter is capable of 45 days in endurance, 29 nautical miles (53.7 kilometers per hour) at speed.

It has a AN/SPS-40 air-search radar, Otobrera 76 mm main gun, Phalanx CIWS radar-guided gatling gun, 25 mm M242 Bushmaster auto cannons, and M240 light machine gun.

“This cutter provides a concrete and significant symbol of the U.S-Viet Nam Comprehensive Partnership,” said U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Michael J. Haycock, assistant commandant for acquisition and chief acquisition officer. “The Coast Guard is honored to see this vessel continue to preserve global peace and prosperity as a part of the Viet Nam Coast Guard./.”
