The relations between Viet Nam and Japan are developing well over the past time. Both countries have consolidated political trust thanks to the regular exchange of high-level visits and contacts, including Emperor Akihito’s State visit and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s official visit to Viet Nam early this year.

The establishment of Viet Nam-Japan extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia in March 2014 and the adoption the Joint Vision Statement on Viet Nam-Japan Relations in September 2015 have created firm foundation for the comprehensive and substantial advancement of the bilateral cooperation in all fields.

Japan is the 4^th biggest trade partner of Viet Nam with the two-way trade volume of US$30 billion in 2016 and the 2^nd biggest investor with over 1,600 projects worth up to US$42 billion.

Japan is the biggest official development assistance provider for Viet Nam, making up about 30% of total ODA committed to the Southeast Asian country.

Bilateral cooperation in security-defense, agriculture, labor, climate change adaptation has progressed positively while people-to-people exchanges and local-to-local ties have intensified.

Both sides also focused on education and training cooperation, noticeably the establishment of Viet Nam-Japan University in Ha Noi in September 2016 and Tokyo Viet Nam Medical University in Hung Yen province in 2015.

During his visit in January this year, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed their wish to further deepen the two countries’ relations, especially in such fields like economy, human resource training, cultural and people-to-people exchanges./.
