State President Quang made the statement while receiving US Ambassador to Viet Nam Ted Osius in Ha Noi on Friday.

The two sides should beef up high-level visits and contacts to enhance mutual understanding and trust building, said State President Quang.

Viet Nam backs free trade on an equal and win-win basis and continues serious implementation of international commitments, including those of free trade agreements, considering it as an impetus to foster economic restructuring.

The Vietnamese Head of State asked the US side to continue its assistance for Viet Nam to overcome the war consequences, especially agent orange/dioxin decontamination and bomb and mine clearance.

Amid fast and complicated changes in the region, State President Quang welcomed US stronger cooperation with regional countries to maintain freedom of navigation and aviation, support the settlement of disputes through diplomatic measures and dialogues based on international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and towards the formation of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

Ambassador Ted Osius expressed his pleasure to continue his working term in Viet Nam.

The Viet Nam-US relations have been developing positively on bilateral, regional and international aspects, he said.

In his letter dated on February 23, President Donald Trump affirmed his wish to boost cooperation with Viet Nam and work with the regional countries to ensure peace and prosperity in Asia-Pacific on the basis of international law, according to Ambassador Ted Osius.

State President Quang highly valued President Donald Trump’s position as it would help boost the bilateral ties and contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

Ambassador Ted Osius took the occasion to speak highly of Viet Nam’s role as the host of APEC Year 2017.

He said President Donald Trump is actively considering his participation in the 25th APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, scheduled to take place in the central city of Da Nang in November./.
