VN, NZ hold political consultation
VGP – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung and New Zealand’s Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade Andrea Smith co-chaired the 10th Viet Nam-New Zealand political consultation in Ha Noi on Friday.

At the event, the two sides agreed on specific measures to promote the bilateral cooperation and vowed to coordinate closely in preparing for PM John Key’s upcoming visit to Viet Nam in 2015.

They committed to accelerating security and defense cooperation through delegation exchanges, dialogues and consultations. New Zealand pledged to assist Viet Nam in the UN-lead peacekeeping operations.

The two sides also agreed to boost business delegation exchanges in a bid to raise the two-way trade volume to US$1.7 billion by 2020.

New Zealand responded positively to Viet Nam’s proposal to beef up food safety cooperation and facilitate Vietnamese agricultural products to penetrate in its market.

The two Deputy FMs highly valued close cooperation at international and regional forums as well as mutual support at the United Nations.

Ms. Andrea Smith advocates the central role of ASEAN in Asia-Pacific, especially in addressing the strategic issues for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

New Zealand supports efforts of all sides to maintain peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, she said, adding that disputes must be settled through peaceful measures.

All parties must exercise self-restraint and take no unilateral actions to intensify tensions or complicate the situation while strictly complying with international law and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, working towards the conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea./.
