In his opening speech at the 8th VFF Congress in Ha Noi on September 26, the VFF leader highlighted the event as a wide-ranging political activity aiming to enhance great national unity, learn more about the VFF’s operations and promote patriotic emulation movements and campaigns towards the successful implementation of socio-economic development, defense and security tasks of localities nationwide.

The congress has received great support from the Politburo, the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, Party organizations, Party and State leaders and a variety strata of domestic and overseas compatriots, Mr. Nhan said.

According to Chairman Nhan, peace, development and cooperation remain major trends in the context of complex and unpredictable global and regional situation. Even so, ethnic and religious conflicts, territorial and maritime disputes, local wars, terrorism, and turbulence and "peaceful evolution" have become apparent in some places.

The world economy is entering a new phase, enjoying higher growth but facing implicit uncertainties and global issues such as energy security, food security, climate change, natural disasters and epidemics.

The establishment of a united ASEAN Community in 2015 will provide an important prerequisite for protecting peace and stability and pushing up regional development. However, Viet Nam is directly encountering risks of infringement of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) while international maritime freedom and security are being threatened.

The achievements and experiences Viet Nam has gained after nearly 30 years of pursuing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process has created much greater combined strength than before.

The VFF President reiterated the Party, State and people's determination to overcome limitations and weaknesses in dealing with socio-economic issues and building the political system.

It is imperative to continue reforming the growth model, restructuring the national economy and fine-tuning the socialist-oriented market economy. The diversity of living conditions and different needs and interests among social strata requires the front to better itself so as to create social consensus in the new situation. Mr. Nhan noted.

The centre of the front’s attention should be focused on intensifying people-to-people diplomacy and strengthening solidarity, friendship, cooperation, and consolidating political trust with neighboring countries, ASEAN countries and strategic partners.

The VFF should join hands with other organizations to connect overseas Vietnamese to their fatherland and enhance its role as a representative to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese people living aboard, he said.

Addressing the congress, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong praised the VFF’s efforts to uphold the glorious tradition and accumulate valuable experiences through the effective implementation of the 7th National Congress thus making significant contributions to the national revolutionary cause.

He also called on the VFF exert more efforts to successfully carry out political tasks and improve people’s living standards by promoting “ For the Poor” and “ Vietnamese people prioritize using Vietnamese goods” campaigns.

The eighth VFF Congress aims to promote the strength of great national unity, national construction and defense towards the goal of building a strong nation with rich people living in an equal, democratic civilized society.

The Congress will also review the five-year implementation of the VFF’s Program of Action for the 2009-2014 term, from which to draw lessons, set goals and action programs for the 2014-2019 term.

It is set to approve VFF statutes (revised and supplemented), conduct democratic consultative meetings to elect the VFF Central Committee in the new term./VOV./.
