MCI declares ten most outstanding cultural events in 2006

 Presiding over the press conference, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Đỗ Quý Doãn said that Vietnam has left a deep impression on its international friends with a variety of landmark political, cultural and social events in 2006, contributing to improving the country’s status in the international arena.

In 2006, the cultural and information sector has been involved in different cultural, artistic, information and journalist activities designed to serve the 10^th Congress of the Vietnam Communist Party, the Year APEC Vietnam 2006, Vietnam’s accession to the WTO and other important events, which helped to bring about a good image of the country at home and abroad.

Other great events also meaning a great deal to the sector included the Law on Cinema being approved by the 11^th National Assembly’s 9^th Session; the plan to build the 10-ha Vietnam National Museum of History; the UNESCO’s acknowledgement of "The Space of Gong Culture in the Central Highlands” as an oral masterpiece and intangible heritage; the 1^st Cultural Festival of Mông Ethnic Group; and the Lacquer Painting Exhibition 2006.

The MCI leaders also recognized a series of problems it needs to resolve such as copyright infringement, delayed construction of cultural landmarks, illegal occupation and use of land at historical sites.

According to Mr. Đỗ Quý Doãn, it is necessary to raise awareness of all ministries, sectors, localities and the people on these problems and require them to take greater responsibility to deal with these. He said the State upholds the policy of involving the whole society in cultural and information development, aiming to build up an advanced culture imbued with national identities.
