Second East Asia Summit prioritizes cooperation in energy, finance, education, bird flu control and natural calamity alleviation

(VNGOVNet) – The 2nd East Asia Summit convened on January 15 in Cebu, Philippines, bringing together ten ASEAN member countries and six partners including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand. Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng attended the meeting and delivered a keynote speech.

PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng said the East Asia Summit is at its initial phase of evolution so countries should be actively working to complete this cooperation process, moving towards an East Asia community. The PM affirmed that Vietnam will do all it can with other ASEAN member countries to make the East Asia Summit a contributing factor to peace, security and prosperity in East Asia.

The summit's discussion centered around energy security - a burning issue capturing the attention of not only regional countries but also the world at large. To boost cooperation in this area, East Asian leaders consentaneously approved The Cebu Declaration on East Asian Energy Security, committed to jointly search for renewable energy resources, efficiency and conservation of the existing energy resources for the secure supply of energy for development of any country in the region.

The summit also spent time discussing the orientations of the East Asia Summit, agreeing to boost cooperation on five priority pillars: energy, finance, education, bird flu control and natural disaster alleviation. The leaders reaffirmed the importance of the East Asia Summit as a forum on strategic issues in the region and an indispensable part of the regional structures, including ASEAN 3, in which ASEAN plays in the leading role.

The summit ended with PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and East Asian State and Government leaders signing the Cebu Declaration on East Asian Energy Security/.
