The Zero Hunger Challenge was first launched by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the Rio 20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Brazil in June 2012. The global initiative aims to call on all countries to work together to put an end to hunger and poverty towards sustainable development.

The initiative aims to ensure a better life for all people, which focuses on five targets: 100% accessing adequate food all year round; elimination of stunted growth among children under two years old; complete sustainable food systems; 100% increase in smallholder productivity and income, and zero loss or waste of food.

On June 12, 2016, the PM has decided to establish a Steering Board for the National Action Plan for Zero Hunger Challenge in Viet Nam in the 2016-2025 period.

It is responsible for assisting the Government chief in designing the national action plan, five-year and annual plans; supervising and coordinating ministries, agencies and localities in implementing approved plans and put forwards measure to mobilize resources from domestic and foreign businesses, organizations and individuals to increase capital for the aforesaid plans.

The Deputy PM asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to set up action plans in 2018 and organize meetings to support the effort.
