Weekly COVID-19 update: 1,890 new cases, 261 recoveries

VGP – There were 1,890 new COVID-19 cases and 261 recoveries from May 24-30, according to the Ministry of Health.

The latest patients include 20 imported cases (three Indian, one Chinese, and 16 Vietnamese).

The Vietnamese returnees returned home from the United Arab Emirates (seven), Malaysia (four), France (one), Japan (one), Australia (one), the Philippines (one), and Hungary (one).

All the other patients (1,870) are community infections recorded in 18 localities, with more than half of them documented in the northern provinces of Bac Giang.

During the past week, 261 patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the total recoveries to 2,950 while the death toll rose by five to to 47.

Amid surge of local infections, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh demanded subordinate levels to exert greater efforts to quickly stamp out COVID-19 outbreaks in key hotspots like Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Ha Noi, and Ho Chi Minh City to ensure socio-economic development.

In general, the COVID-19 pandemic has been controlled but the situation in the aforesaid localities has evolved increasingly complicated due to dangerous variants spreading to industrial parks and religious establishments, said PM Pham.

Pham tasked Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam to oversee the COVID-19 fight as Head of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh was assigned to direct COVID-19 prevention and control in Ho Chi Minh City.

PM tasked Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh to oversee COVID-19 prevention and control in Bac Giang and Bac Ninh – the current biggest hotspots.

Secretary of Ha Noi Municipal Party Committee Dinh Tien Dung was assigned to direct the COVD-19 fight in the capital city.

Pham also ordered subordinate levels to make every effort and utilize every channel to access to foreign vaccine sources while accelerating domestic vaccine research and development.

To prevent spread of COVID-19, the Municipal People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City decided to impose social distancing in the entire city, starting from May 31./.
