WB helps upgrade VN’s rural electricity network

With US $206 million in total, the project targets to upgrade and expand the electric power grids of 110kV, 35kV, and 22kV in around 40 provinces across the nation, so as to deal with overload and blockage of the power network in rural areas and raise effectiveness of the electricity business.

The project will help enhance the existing networks of electric wires, construct more power stations, and upgrade them to 22 kV, 35 kV and 110 kV standards.

As a result, a larger volume of electric power can be stably delivered to business and production households; and power waste and loss will be minimized.

Through the project, technical assistance will be provided with a view to turning power companies into modern electricity-distributing centers.

Out of US $206.28 million poured into the project, the International Development Association (IDA), a fund under the WB specialized in backing low income countries, donates US $150 million, and AusAid funds US $3 million.

WB Acting Country Director in Việt Nam Martin Rama held that for the last 10 years, over 1,800 households have been connected to the national electricity grid daily.
