The news was announced at the conference held on December 19 in Ha Noi on official outcomes of the 2019 population and housing census.

Addressing the conference, Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue said that the census was the largest of this kind as it mobilized nearly 147,000 investigators to cover 96 million people in 26 million households.

This was the first time IT application was applied in all phases from database preparation, collection, processing, and publication.

Particularly, about 125,000 mobile phones were used in the census.

Under the census, Viet Nam had over 26.8 million of households, up 4.4 million in comparison with the same period ten years ago.

Each household had 3.6 persons, lower than 0.2 persons per household in 2009.

Gender rate was 99.1 male per 100 female.

Average housing per capita was 23.2 m2 per person, up 6.5 m2 in comparison with 2009.

Noticeably, nearly 8% of households (equivalent to about 7.7 million people) are living in narrow squares (less than 8m2 per person).

Deputy PM Hue assessed that the census fully reflected population, demographic conditions, population and housing quality, living standards of people.

In addition, the census demonstrated the efficiency of the implementation of population policies; shortcomings of mechanisms and policies in different fields and groups of people like ethnic minority people, disadvantageous female, and people with low education standard.

Mr. Hue suggested relevant agencies research the census; ensure sustainable growth and fair for people.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment was asked to use the census and make specific reports on each fields such as population aging, migration, urbanization, employment, education, and training to optimize the ‘golden population structure’ and escape the medium-income trap./.
