The 17th WFDY Assembly under the theme “Let’s reinforce the struggle against imperialist aggression and exploitation for peace, solidarity and social transformation” was organized in Hanoi on March 9-14, attracting nearly 170 representatives of 76 democratic and progressive youth organizations from 53 countries throughout the world.

This is the first time Vietnam hosts a WFDY Assembly, showing the country’s proactive contributions to the world movement of democratic and progressive youth, and proving the confidence of the WFDY and other member organizations in Vietnam. The Assembly is an opportunity for Vietnam to introduce to her international friends about the country, people, culture, and socio-economic achievements made in 20 renewal years and reconfirm her road to socialism.

At the March 13 meeting, on behalf of Vietnam’s Communist Party, State and people, General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh expressed his gratitude to the movement’s invaluable support and assistance to Vietnam over the past time. He affirmed the country’s determination to build socialism and pointed out specific tasks to be fulfilled on the road to socialism. The CPV leader highlighted the role of youth in the cause of renovation in Vietnam.

The General Secretary said: "Whether Vietnam’s renovation cause is carried out successfully or not, and whether the country advances steadily forwards on the road to socialism and plays an appropriate status in the international community or not significantly depend on nurturing, educating young forces and bringing their strength into play.” Vietnam’s Party, State and people always regard youth work as an essential issue for the national development, General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh emphasized.

He highly appreciated the results of the 17th WFDY Assembly and congratulated the new leaders of the Federation. He was also convinced that the WFDY will succeed in the struggle for peace, independence, democracy and socialism.
