Viet Nam seeks Germany's support for vaccine access, technology transfer

VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested Germany facilitate access to vaccines and transfer of vaccine production technology to Viet Nam.

June 22, 2021 7:40 PM GMT+7

Pham made the above suggestion during his phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday afternoon.

He took the occasion to extend thanks to several states of Germany for having donated one million rapid test kits to the Southeast Asian country.

Regarding bilateral ties, Pham affirmed Viet Nam always attaches importance to the strategic partnership with Germany and wishes to further deepen the close and trusted ties across fields.

The two PMs agreed to work together to soon resume the exchange of high-level delegations and contacts, and consolidate and improve the effectiveness of the existing cooperation mechanisms, including the Viet Nam-Germany Joint Commission on economic cooperation.

They were pleased at at the positive growth of the bilateral economic cooperation despite difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as evidenced by the fact that Germany remains one of Viet Nam’s top trade partners in the EU while Viet Nam is Germany’s largest trade partner in ASEAN.

The pair pledged to collaborate closely in order to fully tap opportunities brought about by the EU-Viet Nam free trade agreement (EVFTA).

PM Pham asked the German Government to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese farm produce, especially seasonal fruits to penetrate the German market and to beef up the EU’s removal of “yellow cards” for Vietnamese seafood and its ratification of the EU-Viet Nam invvestment protection agreement (EVIPA).

Merkel emphasized the importance of the two trade and investment deals between Viet Nam and the EU, saying that Germany enterprises pay great attention to Viet Nam, especially renewable energy, infrastructure development, and processing sectors.

She spoke highly of the two countries’ solidarity and mutual support in this pandemic time, committing to continue cooperation with Viet Nam in combating COVID-19.

The two PMs vowed to continue close coordination and mutual support at international forums and organizations and underlined the importance of ensuring peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation, and upholding the rule of law.

They agreed on the need for parties to fully and seriously implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and to formulate a pracitical and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea in line with international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea./.
