In his opening speech, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev highlighted that for more than half a century, the NAM has promoted the values of humanity.

As one of the biggest organizations of the world, the NAM plays an important role in stability, security and peace in the world and is strongly committed to international law norms, principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of all its members, said the host President.

Earlier on October 24, Vice State President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh met with President Ilham Aliyev, during which the Vietnamese leader affirmed Viet Nam attaches importance to consolidating and enhancing the traditional friendship and multifaceted with Azerbaijan.

She suggested both sides strengthen the exchange of delegations, promote the effectiveness of their Inter-governmental Committee, foster cooperation between their localities, especially in such fields like education, oil and gas, and tourism.

President Aliyev said Viet Nam is one of Azerbaijan’s important partners in Southeast Asia, pledging to double efforts to further beef up bilateral ties with the Southeast Asian country.

Regarding regional and international issues, the two leaders agreed on the need to uphold the rule of law in international relations.

For recent developments in the East Sea, President Aliyev said Azeribaijan supports the positions of Viet Nam and ASEAN on settling disputes through peaceful measures on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, respecting countries’ sovereignty in order to contribute to maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.

In this spirit, the two leaders agreed to further strengthen coordination at international forums and organizations, particularly the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement./.
