Vegetables and fruits earn US$ 3.4 billion of export turnover

VGP – Overseas shipment of fruits and vegetables valued US$ 381 million in November and was estimated at US$ 3.5 billion, representing a year-on-year decline of 0.6%, the Department of Agro-product Processing and Market Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported.

China was the largest importer of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables by occupying 66.8% of the market shares; followed by the U.S. with 4%; the RoK with 3.4%; Japan with 3.2%. 

Dragon fruits were the largest hard currency earner with US$ 974.3 million (representing a year-on-year decline of 8.9%); Durian with US$ 168.5 million (down 1%); coconuts with US$ 109.1 million (down 34.9%); longan with US$ 104.4 million (down 56%); watermelon with US$ 55.7 million (down 26.4%). 

On the other hand, import value of vegetables and fruits was US$ 123 million in November, bringing the total figure to US$ 1.63 billion, representing a year-on-year growth of 3.4%. Thailand was the biggest exporter by accounting for 29.7% (down 24.5% against the same period last year); followed by China with 25.6% (up 10.1%); the U.S. with 15.5% (down 54%); and Australia with 6.3% (up 4%).

The Department attributed difficult export activities to declining overseas shipment of fruits and vegetables. 

Deputy Director of the Department of Agro-product Processing and Market Development Le Thanh Hoa called upon Viet Nam to accelerate registration rate of regional cultivation codes and packaging codes for Vietnamese vegetables and fruits to penetrate into the Chinese market. 

He suggested Vietnamese fruit and vegetable enterprises invest in modern technologies and equipment in deep production and manufacturing; boost partners in supply chains to raise export competence./.
