The figure included Viet Nam’s exports to Germany of US$2.35 billion, which showed a rise of 22.35% and accounted for 18% of total export turnover to the EU.

Computers and electronics topped the country’s commodities exported to Germany (up 130%), followed by paper (up 85%), phones and spare parts (up 81%) and garment (up 10%).

In 2012, Germany was Viet Nam’s most crucial trade partner in the EU and the two countries celebrated a two-way trade turnover of US$9.056 billion.

Viet Nam ranked 43rd in Germany’s trade partners list by making export earnings of US$6.6 billion (up 27.7% year on year) and imports of around US$1.94 billion from the European country.

Viet Nam mainly imports machines, equipment, cars and chemical substances from Germany.

To date, Germany’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Viet Nam hit more than US$1 billion with more than 160 businesses in operation.

Apart from economy, Germany has come up with assistance in other fields in Viet Nam.

At present, the German House is under construction in Ho Chi Minh City. It is expected to be home to German organizations in the city and become a symbol of the two nations’ cooperation.

In July 2013, the German Government asserted its support to Viet Nam’s green growth strategy by boosting up the protection of coastal areas and biology diversification.

Also in the month, German became an official foreign language to be taught in Viet Nam, creating a good chance for those who wish to study in German.

Currently, around 4,200 Vietnamese students are studying in Germany. The Viet Nam-Germany university in Viet Nam has enrolled about 750 students.

On the occasion of the Unification Day, the German Embassy in Ha Noi launched an exhibition entitled “The Life Worlds” capturing similarities and differences in street life between Ha Noi and Germany.
