Managing Director of the International Coffee Organization Nesto Osorio held that despite ranking after Brazil in terms of coffee output, the biggest volume of Robusta coffee and the lowest production cost are advantages of Việt Nam.

In addition, the WTO member status has provided the country’s coffee industry an immense ‘play ground’ of over 5 billion customers and export turnover of US $635 billion per year.

These are golden opportunities for the Southeast Asia country of 500,000 ha of coffee. And domestic and international experts predicted that Việt Nam’s coffee industry is no doubt to enjoy both bigger revenue and market expansion in the time to come.

Việt Nam yearly exports around 850,000 tons of coffee to over 70 countries and territories. In 2007 alone, the figure stood at over 1 million tons, earning US $1.6 billion. In the first six months of 2008, the industry attained over US $1 billion, making a rapid leap against the same period last year.

Việt Nam’s major coffee markets are Germany, the US, Spain and Italy. So far, Việt Nam is listed the second biggest coffee exporter to Italian and German markets. According to statistics, in the eight last harvests, Italy has annually imported 66,000-90,000 tons of coffee from Việt Nam. Lavazza and Pecorani, Italian largest coffee groups, have already opened representative offices and established joint ventures in Việt Nam.
