VN welcomes efforts for lasting peace on Korean Peninsula

VGP – Viet Nam regards the upcoming inter-Korean Summit as an opportunity to establish lasting peace and improve relations between the Republic of Korea (RoK) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang at a regular press conference in Ha Noi on April 19.

In reply to reporters’ questions about Viet Nam's reaction as the RoK and the DPRK are actively preparing for the inter-Korean summit in late April, the Vietnamese official said, ‘Viet Nam welcomes the two sides for holding the Summit on April 27 in order to promote dialogues and maintain stable peace on the Korean Peninsula’.

The inter-Korean Summit is planned to take place at the Truce Village of Panmunjom. This will be the third summit between the two Korean regions after direct talks between their top leaders in 2000 and 2007.

At the summit, RoK President Moon Jae-in and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un are scheduled to discuss solutions to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula aiming to establish long-term peace and improve inter-Korean relations.

The inter-Korean Summit is seen as a positive move after 2017 saw the escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula. There is high hope that a new era of peace will come to the Korean Peninsula after a long period of confrontation and 65 years of conflicts.

Regarding Viet Nam’s response to the fact that U.S.President Donald Trump is considering the US’s participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the spokesperson said the CPTPP is an open deal to which economies could join after it comes into force on the basis of its high standards and consensus among member states. - VOV
