VN welcomes US Senate’s resolution on East Sea

VGP – Viet Nam welcomes the Resolution (S.RES.412) passed by the US Senate, which calls on China to withdraw its Haiyang Shiyou – 981 oil rig and associated maritime forces from their current positions in Viet Nam's exclusive economic zone in the East Sea.

July 12, 2014 3:44 PM GMT+7

Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Hai Binh made the statement on July 11 in response to the issuance of the resolution on July 10.

It also reaffirms the strong support of the US Government for freedom of navigation and other internationally lawful uses of sea and airspace in the Asia-Pacific region; requests China to return to the status quo as it existed before May 1, 2014.

Viet Nam hopes nations inside and outside the region, including the US, will continue to make strong, practical, effective and constructive contributions to peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region, Mr. Binh said./.
