VN wants to give “geographical brand-names” to its territorial waters

VGP – The General Department for Sea and Islands (GDSI) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) is finalizing criteria for granting different territorial waters with “green cards” in an effort to create “geographical brand-names” for Việt Nam’s seas

The nation-level green cards will be licensed to territorial waters which meet adequate standards of efficient exploitation, social welfare, protection of environmental resources, and safe ecosystem.

The cards will be issued with limited term and revoked if territorial waters fail to meet the criteria.

The GDSI recently recommended the Government recognize 15 marine protected areas (MPAs). Hence, by 2015, 11 new MPAs will be established on a par with the four existing ones in Hòn Mun island (central province of Khánh Hòa), Chàm island (central province of Quảng Nam), Phú Quốc island (southern province of Kiên Giang) and Cồn Cỏ island (central province of Quảng Trị).

With a 3,260 km long coastline, over 3,000 islands and territorial waters, Việt Nam enjoys huge potentials for developing its sea-borne economy. However, it is essential to create and promote national maritime trademarks as soon as possible.
