Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng made the statement at the 2nd ASEAN conference on human resources development.

Series of programs have been adopted by the Government for vocational training and numerous efforts have been made to boost regional and international cooperation to raise the country’s workforce quality, he said.

Việt Nam has an 86–million-strong population, including 48 million in working age with 40% of them is trained. Around 51% of the workforce lives in rural areas.

Thus, the Government will focus on improving efficiency of the use of workforce and restructuring the force. Accordingly, the percentage of laborers working in agriculture sector will be reduced by 50% in order to increase the percentage in industry and service sectors, Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân said.

Improving the quality of the workforces is also a common goal toward the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015, which was already enshrined in the ASEAN Charter.

Issues like workforce management for economic recovery and occupational criteria were put on the table of the conference where the delegates worked out key directions for ASEAN’s future human resources development.
