Representatives of the Việt Nam Post and Telecommunication (VNPT) and US-based  Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems sign the 2nd tender package on procurement of satellite, satellite control facilities and launch services, Hà Nội, May 11, 2010

An agreement on the procurement of Việt Nam’s second satellite (Vinasat-2) was signed by the two sides yesterday in Hà Nội.

The US $300-million project was approved by PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng in December last year.
In April 2008, Việt Nam launched the first satellite (Vinasat-1) from South America into space. So far, more than 80% of the capacity of the satellite has been used.

Vinasat-2 is expected to operate for 15 years and can transmit television, radio and civil aviation signals to remote regions of the country and the Southeast Asian region as well. It will also be used as a backup satellite for the first one.
Making his remarks at the signing ceremony, VNPT Chairman Phạm Long Trận said that Vinasat-2 will enhance the country’s telecommunication infrastructure to meet growing domestic and regional demand.
