Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khim: All the nations should  pay greater attention to environment protection and marine economic development

With the theme of boosting the management of ecosystem, coastal and oceanic areas by 2010, the 4th global forum on oceans, coasts and islands officially opened on April 8 in Hà Nội. Nearly 500 attendants from all over the world took part in the forum, including policy makers, managers, and leading scientists.

"The forum is a significant event for the 'oceanic community' and for Việt Nam. It is a good opportunity to bring the oceanic community near to Việt Nam, helping to improve the positions of Việt Nam, its sea and fisheries", Deputy PM, FM Khiêm stressed when addressing the opening ceremony.

The forum topped with discussions on policies and attitudes to the management of seas, islands, and oceans; experience attained from the United Nations' programs on seas and oceans; measures to reach the Millennium Development Goals in the fields of seas and oceans; and preparatory input information to draft the 21st Agenda on the world's oceans by 2012.

The global conference on oceans, coasts and islands is a forum to discuss all the interdisciplinary issues, analyze policies and mobilize knowledge and resources for the management and development of oceans, seas, coasts and islands; reach consensus and confidence in solving global, regional and national issues.
