VN talks about human rights efforts in Myanmar, DPRK, Iran

VGP - Vietnamese ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh joined March 17 dialogues of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on ensuring and promoting human rights in Myanmar, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Iran.

The ambassador lauded Myanmar’s efforts and commitments on political and economic reform, democratization and national reconciliation, while ensuring and promoting citizens’ rights.

He also valued efforts of the UNHRC, the UN organizations and international community in supporting Myanmar, saying that the international community should continue cooperation with Myanmar on the basis of respecting its sovereignty and independence, conducting constructive dialogues and sincere cooperation to strengthen the country’s achievements in democratization, national reconciliation, economic development and ensure of citizens’ rights, especially those of vulnerable social groups.

Ambassador Thanh expressed his belief that Myanmar is on the right way towards peace, security and prosperity. He affirmed Viet Nam’s goodwill and efforts in supporting Myanmar’s improvements in living standards and human rights, saying that Viet Nam is ready to share experience with the regional country in national reconstruction, socio-economic development and regional and international integration.

Regarding the implementation of human rights in the DPRK, the ambassador stressed that parties should maintain constructive dialogues and sincere cooperation to seek an appropriate long-term solution in order to improve the internal situation and issues related to the Korean Peninsula.

He suggested immediate priorities over humanitarian issues, particularly those related to the rights of food, education, and health care, especially those for children and women.

In a speech at the dialogue about human rights in Iran, the Vietnamese representative spoke of the country’s energy program would probably open a new era for cooperation between Iran and the world, contributing to enhancing regional security and peace.

During the UNHRC’s 25th session, other important issues which are drawing the international community’s attention will also be tabled until March 28.
